It all started because of love.โฃ
โฃ12 years ago, Matt and Andrea Houghton founded Boatrocker. “We were driven by a love for each other, and a love for beer. That might sound completely insane, but that is what has driven us all these years, and continues to do so.” Matt explained.โฃ

His first sip of a Cantillon beer changed his life. “I was captivated years ago by barrels and their flavour impact on beer when I was backpacking through Europe in 1998. My first port of call was Cantillon and, boy, did that spin my head around!” It set him on a path to beer enlightenment. “I am a lover of the romance of barrels, but also the complexities they can impart on beer, whether sour or funky or spirit-infused. They are the art of beer making.”โฃ

This romantic notion had driven Matt to buy 60 used wine barrels from Yering Station for AUD 5000 when he first started the brewery. “My wife [Andrea] does all the accounts and the bookkeeping. I still remember her asking if we were starting a brewery or a winery! Thankfully, it sort of came to fruition.” โฃ

It was Matt and Andrea’s faith towards each other and their passion towards beer that drove Boatrocker to become one of the largest barrel-ageing facilities and undoubtedly one of the finest breweries in Australia. โฃ

Take “๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐๐” as an example, it is a Flanders-Style Red Ale blended using “Methode Soléra” - a process for aging liquids such as wine, beer, vinegar, and brandy, by fractional blending in such a way that the finished product is a mixture of ages. “๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐๐” is a careful blend of 12, 18, 24 and 48 month-old oak aged beers that each bring with them varying levels of lactic acid, acetic acid and brettanomyces. It results in an abundant taste of red berries with a rich malt character that balances the tartness with malt sweetness.โฃ
